About Erie Colorado

The Town of Erie, Colorado straddles Weld and Boulder Counties. Erie is conveniently located just 20 miles north of the Denver Metro area and 15 miles northeast of Boulder. Erie was first settled in the early 1870s as a coal mining camp. A new railroad connection from Brighton arrived in 1871, brining a boom in population. The Town was incorporated in 1874 by John Wells, who was an officer in the Boulder Valley Mining Company.

In 1995, Erie celebrated its 125th anniversary. Similar to its early boom and bust cycles, the Town's 125th anniversary was marked by another period of growth. As neighboring communities on the Front Range grow, so has Erie experienced increased interest from commercial and residential developers. Erie's location along the busy I-25 corridor has made the Town a bedroom community for the surrounding cities of Longmont, Boulder and Denver. In early 2000, the year in which the paving of the Town's streets was to be completed, Erie had an estimated population of 7,000. The Town's 1999 Comprehensive Plan update called for an ultimate population of approximately 35,000 for Erie's 45-square-mile planning area.

Today, Erie is home to a number of civic organizations including the American Legion, Erie Hispanic Organization, Lion's Club, Erie Historical Society, Erie Chamber of Commerce, Erie Library Association, many churches and other support and charitable organizations.
